The PROBLEM with Android 17 in Dragon Ball Super!
17’s been fun in the tournament, but I imagine a lot more so for anyone who was pretty indifferent to him in Z. I have no idea what happened in Super, but it feels like the life’s been sucked right outta the guy.
If I could have described 17 in a word in Z, it would have been: impulsive. He was out to have fun at whatever cost no matter how ridiculous or self inhibiting. He deliberately slowed down their mission just to have fun riding in a pink van rather than flying, even.
He was a fun-seeker; cocky, but respected a level of honor in fights as shown by letting 18 fight Vegeta alone, and asking 18 to let him fight Piccolo alone. His own faith in his abilities led to his downfall though, thinking 16’s strength was enough to let them all take Cell.
So the 17 in Z was a guy who:
-Sought novel experiences (like driving a car or being a park ranger) for fun as a primary goal.
-Was brimming with self-confidence and had fun testing his strength in 1 on 1 fights, but also constantly overestimated himself and approached every threat head on.
-Had the honor to respect said fights even if he wasn’t involved personally.
-Was not above resorting to dirty tactics if his freedom or life was at risk in spite of this.
In Super, he’s been:
-Cold; mentions his family in portraits, but never displays a particular amount of emotion beyond a sort of distant smile.
-Straight faced; never displays the sort of anger or emotion he did in Z beyond exertion for a ki blast or two, reacts to everything with either a slight smirk, slight frown, or completely neutral expression.
-Incredibly strategic; uses common sense first and will do what it takes to win at all costs, even in more casual fights. No initial respect for solo fights, almost never fights head on unless he’s completely sure he can win.
-Nearly flawless. Recognizes all problems before any other character can, never makes almost any mistakes himself, and has been able to at the very worst hold his own against every single opponent he’s come up against by himself.
Something that took me until the most recent episode to realize; 17 hasn’t been 17 in Super. He’s been 16. 16 was cold and distant, being a full robot he didn’t have a great grasp on emotions until later on, and even then expressed them subtly.
He was extremely calculating and strategic, only fighting when they were in direct danger and yelling at 17 and 18 to run the moment he realized he couldn’t win. He may have even won the fight with Cell if they’d listened to him.
if Android 16 was in 17’s spot this arc, I’d be incredibly on board. It makes way more sense with how they wrote the arc than 17 does. Super’s 17 is a cool character… he just doesn’t feel like Android 17 is my problem. But that’s just me.. Let me know what you think down below and for now, Peace 🙂
